2014 Winter Olympics

The city of Sochi will be the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014. Sochi was elected on 4 July 2007 by the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 119th Session in Guatemala City. Sochi was up against the cities of PyeongChang and Salzburg but Sochi prevailed in the second round of voting.

Sochi's winning bid, according to observers, owed much of its success to the personal intervention of President Vladimir Putin. The Russian president gets so much credit because Sochi's win was far from assured. In terms of current sports facilities and other technical considerations, Sochi lagged far behind its Austrian and South Korean rivals. The Krasnaya Polyana ski resort, where the Olympics will be held, currently boasts just one ski lift. The national government, however, promised to go all out if Sochi won the bid. Kremlin’s promise included a plan to turn the area into one vast, state-of-the-art winter ski paradise just a stone's throw from the shimmering shores of the Black Sea.

The final decision on the Host City for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014 was made by the full IOC membership during the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City on 4 July 2007.

The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held from February 7 to February 23, 2014 and will feature multiple sports events. This will be the first time that the Russian Federation will host the Winter Olympics; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow.
