Basics of Bobsledding

Bobsledding can be best likened to driving a car full speed onto a plane of ice that twists and turns. Using a bobsled, the bobsled team races down the mile of track that slopes and curves in a way that could make the bobsled spin uncontrollably.

How to become a bobsled driver

For those who want to learn to bobsled, getting familiar with bobsledding rules is a good place to start. Prospective bobsledders should watch bobsledding events to get an idea of how to bobsled. Of course, there are training courses and camps to teach novice bobsledders to control the bobsled. With formal training and experience, bobsledding can be an exciting and extremely competitive sport.

The bobsled course is a 1,200 to 1,600-meter track made of either concrete or stone and coated with snow and ice. Elevated by around 110 to 125 meters, the bobsled course is full of sharp turns and surprising slopes. The Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing or the FIBT regulates the bobsledding games around the world.

Watching the top bobsledders racing is the best way to learn to bobsled. Sprinting as they push the sled, they run for about 50 meters and then hop in the sled right before turning. The bobsled team can be composed of two to four players based the type of sled and event, and the team cooperates to control the sled. The driver, brakeman, and the crewmen work together to oppose the drag during the run, and they all wear helmets, start shoes with spikes, and fitted aerodynamic suits.

In a bobsled competition, there are different bobsledding events based on weight. Bobsledding races can be two-man (with 860 pounds of weight including the crew and the tools), two-woman (750 pounds), and four-man (1,389 pounds). Before the start of the race, officials take the temperatures of all the players to compare to the temperature of a runner who has been exposed to air for an hour. If the temperature varies from the reference temperature by more than four degrees, the bobsledder is disqualified.

In the Bobsled World Championship competition, the track is about 1,500 meters long. In the two-man, the weight is set at 827 pounds, while in the four-man, it is 1,388 pounds. The teams make four runs each at the bobsled World Championships. Meanwhile, in the Bobsled World Cup, they make two runs each.
